I'm based in the UK and have an automatic so I'm not up to a specific answer on this! First off, why not start a new thread headed something like "advice needed on clutch repair", say roughly what state/part of the world you live in, and see if someone local to you can recommend a specialist who will charge less than a dealer.
Having said that, I'm sure many dealers are fine and I can't see why even the most rapacious shop would charge you money to diagnose a slipping clutch - the workshop manager should take it round the block in an effort to get your business. If you are not confident with this, go to more than one shop - or check the list of sponsors to see if one is local to you.
Also, you could search the board for "clutch", though you might refine that as there are over 2,800 posts on the subject!
For background you could/should buy the Haynes manual for the 9000, ISBN 1 85960 184 7. This is a British publication so you'll find some thing back to front. But it's probably the best and most accessible guide to doing things yourself on a 9K.
