However, I could not qualify my installation as a "subwoofer,: describing it as a dedicated "woofer" would be more accurate because it only has useful response down to about 60hz.
I used two 4" woofers in a small selaed 5.5" square cube. The woofers were mounted in an "isobarik" configuration, meaning that they are both using the same cabinet, but are wired out of phase, which has the effect of doubling the cabinet volume. See this link for a good description of an isobaric enclosure: http://www.audiovideo101.com/dictionary/isobaric.asp
If you remove the kick panel on the left side of the passinger footwell, you will find that there is a decent size opening just behind the fire- wall (just in front of the ACC duct that leads to the rear footwells), which will readily house a cabinet of that size.
This configuration provides a similar effect to mounting woofers in the door panels: it provides some useful mid/upper bass to help the front speakers blend with the rear speakers/subwoofer. The advantage over mounting in the door panels is the presence of a true sealed enclosure, which offers better transient response and power handling.
Below is a link to my original post, which describes the installation in more detail. Thus far, I have been VERY satisfied with the results.
Good Luck!
