I use it on the threads for the same reason - it's hard to know if the bubbles are from your system or from the gaps around the threads, so using the tape removes ambiguity. I've not noticed any breakdown of the tape from the brake fluid, but I plan to look for this more expensive tape that you mention.

Removal of the front caliper piston is best done with compressed air. However, you should place a 1x4 piece of wood in the wide groove where the rotor sits, as the piston comes flying out and can become damaged if it hits a metal surface. You can deliver the compressed air through either the bleeder nipple hole or the brake line fitting. I did the latter, because you can close off the bleeder nipple hole simply by closing the nipple.
