As far as the black brake dust, change to PBR Deluxe pads. These are available through Sobstory. Hardly any dust and they perform great.
I also stayed away from brake work but eventually found out it isn't that hard. You can replace that caliper easily. Once you have the wheel off, you can see the large bolts that hold the caliper on. Spray these with some liquid wrench or similar a few days prior to your work, avoiding getting any lubricant onto the brake rotor. Removing the brake line is best done once you get the old caliper off, and attaching the brake line to the new caliper is best done prior to bolting the thing in.
You'll want to get yourself some high-temp anti-seize compound with copper. You smear this on the back sides of the new pads to prevent squeaking. Just put it onto the areas that contact metal, not the whole thing. Avoid letting even a smudge of this stuff get onto the braking surface of the pads.
A Haynes manual is quite helpful for the whole procedure, and I've found it to provide pretty much all the info you need, except for how to get the retaining wire back on, which I still have trouble with.
Bleeding the brake system isn't too bad. There are numerous articles archived on proper technique.
