I don't consider the seal to be that hard, but it does take time. Replacing the seal itself is pretty easy. Getting to it takes removing a bunch of stuff.
Last time I did an oil seal, I would call it about a 3-4 hour job. It took longer than that, more on that later.
I'm never sure when / what model when Saab went to the automatic serpentine belt tensioner. That makes it slightly more tricky because I recommend you build the special tool. Nothing fancy - a piece of plate steel with two bolts, but a tool nevertheless.
If you're going to replace the seal, replace the oil pump O-ring while you're in there. The oil pump is bolted to the face of the timing cover, and the crank comes right through the middle of the pump. The seal sits in the pump. The O-ring goes between the pump and the timing cover.
Replacing the main seal and O-ring is pretty straightforward - remove the belt(s), remove the main pulley, unbolt the oil pump. Replace the O-ring, replace the pump. Stick in a new seal. If the main pulley is looking wonky, replace it.
If the timing cover is leaking, that does take a lot more work. I would assure myself what was leaking before going in. To do this, I've removed the fender inner liner, cleaned the area, set the car back down and run the engine. I then inspect the area with an inspection mirror. You want to know what's leaking before you go in.
What else to do while you're in there? How about new belts, as the old ones are coming off. Is the water pump leaking? Now's the time. The belts are off - spin the idler pulleys - any feel like the bearings are shot? If so, do it now. How are the motor mounts? They're right in front. Alternator need a new voltage regulator - it's an easy reach.
That's why mine took a bit longer. I went to replace the main seal and O-ring. I ended up replacing lower motor mounts, idler pulley, and an alternator. With the inner fender liner off, so much of the 9000 is open, you might as well do it.
