The A/C is a great way to defrost the window. That's not a heater core problem. On the 45 degree days we've been getting in CT, you take that warm air, heat it up over the heater core, then blow it onto a cold windshield where it condenses. Running the AC dries the air, so you blow dry warm air, not wet warm air.
In your case, definately drop in the rest of the bottle. No, this stuff won't clog up your cooling system. But in order not to do so, it doesn't work instantly.
I would give it yet another couple of weeks. One problem is that even after you seal the leak, there is some coolant on the outside of the core that will take its fine time cooking off.
Check ALL the coolant hoses for leaks. This time of year I recommend going around and tightening all the hoses. As the weather gets colder, there is more of a temperature difference between a cold and hot engine. This leads to more expansion and contraction, and this can loosen up hoses. You'd be surprised how loose some can get. What happens is you get a little leak, not enough to drip, but enough to evaporate. At idle this smell gets pulled into the cabin. If you notice a coolant smell OUTSIDE of the car or if the hood is opened, then it's not the heater core, but a leak in the engine compartment.
Removing the heater core is from the engine side. The firewall directly behind the engine is called the false firewall. There is a 'real' firewall farther back. The area in between is called the 'aquarium', and that's where the heater core lives. You remove the horizontal panel at the base of the windshield (engine compartment) and remove the core from there. It's not an easy task, but it's easier on the newer cars. If the '98 in your moniker indicates the year of the car, that's definately one of the newer (easier) cars.
Hold off on that heater core change as long as you can.
