Synthetic has lots of advantages - it maintains vicosity over a greater range of temperatures, it resists coking, and it resist the breakdown that causes acids to build up. That said-

I use good quality dino oil. I see synthetic as having two major advantages - you can run it longer (doesn't breakdown as fast) and the better viscosity range.

I change my oil very 3-4K miles. In that time, a good quality dino oil hasn't broken down very much, and there are still enough buffers to take care of any acid buildup. I change the oil at a shorter interval for one major reason - when the oil leaves, so do particles, grit, combustion by-products, and other assorted crap. Synthetic oil may last for 10K miles, but that stuff is still circulating through the system. Yes, there is an oil filter, but that only catches particles, usually 20 microns and above. It doesn't remove chemicals or small particles which can abrade. This is especially true of high mileage engines which may have more wear and a bit more combusion bypass at the rings.

I don't live in a major temperature extreme area (Connecticut). It rarely drops too far below 0F in the winter, or above 100 in the summer. The extra viscosity range will provide a little less wear on those super-cold morning starts, but they are few and far between. If I lived in a place where it was regularly below zero F in the morning, I might think about it.

So my approach is to use a good quality dino oil and change it frequently. I don't want any oil in there for a long time, relying on the filter to do the job. Maybe for a new engine, but not for a loose, high-mileage one.

As to oil, I use Castrol GTX. Nothing magical, it's just what I've used for the past few decades and it's been good to me. I'm sure any decent brand oil that meets all the S grade requirements would be fine.
