First, check the fluid level in the brake reservoir. Sounds, definitely,
like a hydraulic problem. Even if it's a small item, you may be
better off doing a full clutch job. It could be that the master cylinder,
the one that's attached to the clutch pedal, is bad. That would be
the best-case scenario. It would mean $100 in parts and something
that you should be able to accomplish in an afternoon. If it's
something other than that, then it probably means pulling the
transaxle out of the vehicle - which isn't that bad, and could be
done in a day if you have the tools and a vehicle lift. A complete
clutch/hydraulic repair would include: clutch, pp, slave, t.o. bearing,
new hydraulic line, and master cylinder. One of the site sponsors
could supply all items for about $600 - maybe less. You didn't say how many miles were on this, but being a '91, I'm sure it isn't low-mileage. If I were going to keep the vehicle, I'd do the complete rebuild and be secure that you won't have any clutch problems for the next 100-150k miles.
