yes - Bristol picked up the 2-litre engine from the pre-war BMW 328 which used to produce 85 bhp as standard, but could be tuned to give about 130 bhp for racing. In fact their first car, the 400, was inspired by the BMW combined with their own aircraft practices. Bristol beefed everything in the engine up and by the late fifties it was developing from 120 bhp up to say 160 maximum in racing tune.
AC started by using their own engine in the Ace - an engine that really dated back to (I think) 1919. They then fitted the Bristol engine and, finally, the 2.6 Ford. The nose design of the Ford-engined cars is different - less like the "moustachioed" Ferrari Barchetta style of the earlier Aces - and this is the shape that was picked up for the AC Cobra.
Later Bristols went on to use V8s too, of course.
