I also have a 1993 Aero and noticed a maple syrup smell, so I took it to my mechanic to see how much it should cost to fix and there is actually a recall on these cars that is still in effect that actually will replace the heater core. To check if the recall has been completed on that car, first look at the engine compartment, and (looking from the front of the engine) there should be an aluminum plate on the right, close to the hood shock. That is the recall plate, if it is stamped with a number 8, the recall has been performed. If it isn't stamped, take the car to the dealer and ask them to perform the recall. I will give you the actual recall number when I get home this evening if I still have the paperwork, but I know the recall is actually for the ABS system, and sometimes the heater core leaks on the abs computer and shorts it out so if the core is bad enough to be leaking, they will replace, but if not, you have to shell out the big ones. I will also tell you that traction control is not a problem on my car, but you should look on the rear firewall and there is a little cylindrical valve with vacuum hoses going into it, if there are blue plastic pieces on it, it has been updated and will give you no problems for as long as you have the car. If it has white plastic pieces on it, you should tell the guy you will have to replace it soon and have the TCS re-calibrated, hopefully the guy will knock of another 300 or so if you bring this up. Good luck Patrick and if you have any other year specific questions feel free to e-mail me.
