answers to a few questions in this thread,
my current '98 aero with 97k came with a shot 2nd synchro, don't know the driving habits of the owner so I can't comment. I replaced this myself and took lots of photos Haynes style and posted them here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/home01/gearbox/index.html
My '91 Carlsson with 115k developed the bearing whine within a month of switching to synthetic - don't do it, don't even think about it!!!
The typical rebuild cost in the uk is £500-600 (this will just be bearings and gaskets etc) plus £100-150 for removal/installation, plus around £150 for a new clutch and slave. You can pay a lot more than this if you go to some places, but they probably include synchros etc in the price.
The bearings are not Saab proprietary and can be bought from good suppliers. If you are thinking of doing it yourself, invest in the Saab workshop manual (£8 from a dealer) it shows how to set bearing preloads and gives tolerance values etc that are essential if the rebuilt box is to last.
