The only linkage (cable) adjustment is to ensure that the detents on the shifting pawl inside the transmission are fully engaged when the shift lever is in the appropriate gear selection position. This verfication/adjustment can be done by feel by someone with experience and/or patience, but the only foolproof way of doing it is to remove the valve body and observe the position of the spring detent roller with respect to the gear select position.
The governor seals are another common source of reverse/first gear misbehavior. When an automatic transmission acts up, before intiating any work, it is also always a good practice to drain and inspect the fluid and pickup magnet for obvious signs of internal damage.
