I agree it's really cheap. I would have at least expected a plastic/fiberglass coating on the side that faces the passenger compartment so if the top is repaired the "showing" side will always look perfect.
That said if you take the fabric off it will look horrible, what you will be left with is a brownish white pressed/formed paper with bits of orange that will flake off at random moments and drive you crazy until you fix it.
If you have a hatchback removing and reinserting the headliner is not really that difficult and the whole project can be done over several days. I repaired mine for around $30. I used fleece from a fabric store and one can of spray adhesive. The fleece matched almost perfectly and looks/feels really cool and different.
