which sits directly between the clutch master-cylinder and the clutch itself.
Mine has been making a gritty whirring noise for a while now. The noise stops when I unload the bearing by pushing the clutch in, and also changes in frequency when I move the stick around while slowing down in gear (it is especially noticeable in first gear). By the way, I also have my shifter coupling held together with hose clamps.
A reliable Saab mechanic told me that the release bearing can make noise like that for many years, and is very unlikely to fail under any circumstances.
The release bearing is readily visible (with good light) through the spy hole on top of the transmission.
A reasonable way to test it is to have someone press the clutch while the engine is running in neutral. Put your ear down near the transmission spy hole. If you hear the noise come and go, then its probably the release bearing.
I confirmed the source of the noise by dripping a small amount of motor oil onto the bearing from above, being very careful not to get any into the clutch. The noise dissappeared for a while and gradually returned as all of the oil spun out of the bearing.
Even though it's a $20 part, the only way to replace it by removing the transmission.
