The hydraulic lifters (or cam followers) can make a lot of noise if they're worn or clogged.

The lifters are supposed to maintain a cusion of oil between themselves and the washer shaped valve spring reatiners (at the top of the valve stems), so that no actual contact ever occurs between the two. Worn or clogged lifters will leak out this oil cushion at idle because of inadequate oil pressure.

The result is a rhythmic ticking noise coming from just under the valve cover that will dissapear at higher RPMs.

Try stabbing the throttle for about half a second and then listen as the engine returns to idle, if the noise dissapears momentarily and then returns, the lifters are probably your problem.

If the noise is isolated to the far left (passenger) side of the valve cover, then you may have a worn timing/balance chain or worn chain guides.

Try to isolate the location of the noise under the valve cover, this will make troubleshooting much more productive.
