Your basic instinct is correct. The insurance company is dicking you around. This is their current standard operating procedure. They are delaying paying your claim, even though they know that they will have to pay in the future, because they will not have to pay interest on the delayed payment. If they really cared, they could get in touch with the towing company. But, they don't.
It's time for your insurance company to step up. Your Uninsured Motorist coverage should take care of this. However, I know Mass is a "No-Fault" state and insurance coverage is slightly different. That said, under general principle's your insurance company should pay to fix your car and pursue the wrong-doer's carrier for reimbursement. Call them and demand that they fix your car today.
I don't think a lawyer will be much additional help with this. Not that I would discourage anyone from spending money on legal services. My opinion would change if your insurance compay refuses to fix your car. Then you have something to work with.
