for my '91 for $100. It was in excellent working condition. A DIY retrofit would mean replacing the reciever/dryer and expansion valve (both of which are accesible under the "aquarium cover" on the passenger side) and also replacing all of the o-ring seals and connection valves (included in a "retrofit kit") on the compressor. These components MUST be replaced, all of the other components can be left in place.
I purhcased these components online at eeuroparts.com for less than $100 US. The conversion too me about 2 hours.
My understanding is that an R12 system retrofitted to R134A works at a slightly reduced capacity.
Once the system has been retrofitted, take it to a service place to have
it professionally evacuated and charged. This means then they should draw the system into a deep vaccum (which removes all residual traces of R12), and then wait to see if it holds the vaccum (preferably overnight if possible). If so, then presmably the system has no leaks, and is ready to accept a refrigerant/oil charge. In the US, this would cost $100 - $150.
So the best case scenario for a DIY retrofit has the total cost at about $350 US.
However, the cost will increase if there are problems with the condensor or evaporator, or if the hoses have leaks.
Good Luck!
