I love my silly auto tranny but at 120,000 I would personally be planning for a replacement in the near future, especially as you don't know what some other beggar has been doing to the car for the past fifteen years. Down-side - the transmission will cost more than the car.
Up-side - the car is so cheap, and the mileage so reasonable (if genuine) that it's probably worth a punt anyway, because you'll likely get $1,000 out of it before the tranny goes ping, and if you like the car you can then go on to 250,000 miles or whatever stratospheric figure you care to achieve. If you don't like it, walk away, now or later.
As you already know, things break on old cars, and cars that were expensive to buy originally cost more to fix that ones that started out cheap and have already died the death. The question is, do you feel lucky?
Final note - I love the smell of auto trannys in the morning. Don't write it off because of the auto: turbo plus auto can be fun, and satisfyingly agressive - trust me.
