I have seen from them. Distilled is the only thing you should add to the cell as the is no loss of acid, just the hydrogen is lost in outgassing (and Oxy too) in the magic world of ions during charging. The batteries of today are fairly well designed to keep the losses at a minimum as compared to 30 years ago. I got on my soap box a few posts ago about treating the battery as an expendable part that should be replaced much more often than we cheapskates tend to actually do. It all boils down to how much stress do you want the alternator to live with and do you always want it to start? You speak of lead in the enviroment, the battery you have has probably been many batteries before you got it in its reborn state. Recycling is cheaper for the manufacturers so they do it.
