Just got back to my 9K with the light engine knock when warm not hot or cold. I pulled the rod caps off and found the upper bearing shells
worn into what looks to be lead? The layer before the copper. On 2 you can actually see the copper if you look hard enough. Cylinder # 4 rod bearing is clearly to the copper and has a little scoring. Crank journals are not scored, but I will have to plasticgage with the new bearings. I'm thinking something is making the bearings get low oil pressure or flow. I pulled the pickup out of the sump and it was perfectly clean. Absolutely no sign of sludge anywhere. Oil was changed every 1500-3000 miles.
I also checked the pickup O ring and it was not hardened or mishaped. I also checked the O rings for the oil feed tube which connects from the filter housing to the block. All looked OK.
Oil pressure measured at 63 PSI/2500 rpm warm and when noise was occuring.
I checked the 4th main bearing and it looks good with no unusual wear. But the oil does feed the rods through the mains?
I would appreciate anyones thoughts on this strange and unusual condition. Thanks to everybody who have been responding to my concern as I dig deeper into the cause.
