Actually, this concept does make sense to me. I've always thought that if you figured out how to trick Trionic into thinking boost was lower than it actually is you'd have a measured and meaningful performance increase. But being electronically challenged and even more timid experimenting with such an expensive gadget like an ECU, especially if it is mine, the idea remained just that, a figment.
If it works, $400 for four psi increase would probably be worth it. I paid $750 for my ECU upgrade that gives up to six psi extra boost, but there are caveats to adding boost in general that I didn't anticipate beforehand:
First, in summer I cannot get maximum boost because of the heat and the unavailability of gas >93 octane. This may be solvable by installing either a water-injection system or a larger intercooler, but that's extra money. What's solvable by even more extra money is the clutch slippage I'm now getting because the pressure plate and/or disk can't handle the extra torque, probably in the neighborhood of 35-40 lb. ft. more than stock. So to correct that I'll probably need to do a complex clutch-parts replacement, and high-performance parts are not cheap. If you can't pull the tranny yourself its even more.
So before thinking about the thrill of a boost increase, which is indeed a rush, think about the side effects and what they may do to your bank account. If you don't mind the initial and subsequent costs of a boost increase, go for it.
