Hello all,
I've got an 87 9000T with 196,000 miles. Just moved to Albuquerque, NM--the only shop I can find in town charges $80/hr for labor. Absurdity--can't swing it.
Was hoping somebody could help me out.
There's lots of little issues, but my main one is this:
1. Car is cold--after work, been sitting outside in 60, 50, then 40 degree weather all day.
2. Start the car--starts right up. Gotta be creative with the throttle to prevent stalling--a little gas, lots of little light taps to get the RPM up, then hold in the gas. Too much gas kills the engine, surefire.
3. Here's the main issue. After I get the revs up when it's cold, I'll keep the gas down in the precise position to maintain 3k revs, say. It's smooth, doesn't miss at all. However, like clockwork, and without changing the amount I'm pressing down on the gas pedal, the RPMs drop after a few seconds. Even while maintaining, say, 1/4 gas pedal pressure to hold 3k RPMs, the revs will invariably drop back down to around 500, sometimes stalling. Even as I hold the gas down. If I release the gas, then do the light tap on the throttle gig, I can get the revs back up and repeat the same thing.
4. This tends to happen only on a cold start, when it's a bit chilly outside.
Engine is running smooth, good gas, no other issues. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem somewhere. Starting many, many years ago, all the mechanics have been telling me to replace the air mass meter.
Is a faulty air mass meter causing this problem?
Should I clean it or replcae it?
OK to replace with a used/reconditioned AMM?
What about this line near the AMM that sometimes needs cleaning?
Is replacing the AMM something I could do myself, as a mid-level do-it-yourselfer?
Thanks all, very much for your help...
Best,
Mike Procopio
