I agree with Steven, and it must be stressed that the Saab 9K 5-speed is historically a transaxle sensitive to the fluid used. On older cars (up to somewhere in '97), 10w30 fossil engine oil was used at the factory, but newer cars were equipped at the factory with the new synthetic MTF. If your manual states that synthetic was used you must have a later car.
There are cases where using synthetic hypoid gear oil can destroy these transaxles, especially those in pre-'94 cars. In '94 the tranny was upgraded and it may be more robust, but I still would use only one of two fluids in older cars, neither of which is compatibile with the other, or Saab's synthetic fluid in newer cars. If your car originally came with fossil oil, which your's apparently didn't, you can use either that or the new fluid, but only after the old oil is completely purged as specified by SI 471-1742 (shown below). Keep in mind that this is for later cars with drain plugs, as purging for other cars is not so straightforward.
If you have a later car with the new fluid installed at the factory, you IMO can do one of two things: Leave it alone and never change it, which is the recommendation from Saab, or change it on a schedule that makes you happy. On my '95 which had fossil oil installed at the factory, I changed it 30k miles ago and changed it again recently. At $13/qt. you may think twice before changing frequently, even though it only takes two quarts (in my '95).
