I have had the car for what seems like an eternity (8 years). Now I am faced with potentially putting the old friend down. Just passed 155k miles and on cold Michigan mornings, the transmission slips just a bit between second and third gear. It stops slipping once warmed up.

I have talked to a couple transmisison shops in town who talk about a $3800 rebuild, and the dealer talks about a $3200remanuactured unit. With this many miles, I really don't think I want to spend that kind of cash on the car, although it is a very solid car. Has no rust, near perfect interior, and everything else works.

I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has gone with a new transmission in a high milage Saab 9000. Let me know how you justified spending the money on a big ticket repair. From what I see the used Saab 9000's aren't selling for more than 3500 to 4000 dollars. I am having a tough time with it, but I wasn't ready to part with this car yet either.

The dealer actually told me to drive the car until it breaks and part it out. I love this old car and the thought of parting it out really stinks.
