You are right about the position of the ash tray. That access works for the Clarion-equipped early years, but not for the Harmon-Kardon later years.
What I do is pull out the lower (large) dash cubby. (It's easy to do by hand if you push down the upper lip with your fingernail near the center and pull forward, then do the same at the bottom center.) Since the HK radios do not have the amplifer section on the back of their cages, (depending on you arm length and girth) you can reach up through the cubby, behind the radio and CD player and push the ACCII out the back. Once it's out, it's trivial to remove any other dash component.
The temperature sensor is a little tricky because it snaps into place with locking tabs, unlike any of the switches. It is easy to remove the front "bulls eye" using a small "L" or hook shaped tool. However, to remove the sensor itself, you have to grasp it from behind and pinch the sides together to free the locking tabs. It is removed from the rear.
