Cooling fan and fast idle ... and overheating

My 91 Turbo hatchback has a new set of problems and I'm wondering wheather they're related. The first symptom appeared right after I changed the heater core and blower motor. I was losing coolant, but everything else seemed okay. The coolant loss appears to be through the water pump seal and was minor. The next two symptoms happened in rapid succession. The engine now idles at a high speed (1500 to 2000rpm) and the fan motor doesn't start, not even when the engine overheats, which it seems to do long before the temp guage reaches 3/4 of the way to "hot". A stop at long traffic light is sufficient to cause overheating. Of course, the coolant leak and the cold air here in the northeastern US might tend to exagerate the problem visually, with steam coming out from the hood.
A third problem is that the battery doesn't seem to hold a charge for more than a day, but that may or may not be related.
Any thoughts on this problem? I've not had the time or the space to check the fan motor for continuity, and because it's winter and I have no garage, will probably have to entrust the work to a shop... any guesses as to what the problem/solution/cost might be?
Thanks, and happy holidays.
