When you say the battery light is on, do you mean the battery light is on, THEN the car stalls, or the battery light comes on WHEN the car stalls?
It's normal for the battery light to be on when the key is ON but the engine isn't running. If the battery light is on when the engine is running, then you've got an alternator problem (most likely voltage regulator).
If you've been starting the car, the battery is good, and the battery can sustain the load (engine electronics and others) at idle.
Just in case, make sure the connections to the battery are good. This involves removing the clamps and cleaning the contacts between the clamp and post. Just looking won't help, as it's the mating surfaces you can't see that count.
I'm suspecting an different problem than electrical. The engine is quitting in the 'foot off the gas' time between shifts. I'm assumeing we're talking 5 speed tranny here. Make sure there are NO vacuum leaks - check everywhere. My favorite place is the hose at the charcoal canister. You can't see it because it's buried in the RF fender. Remove the RF turn signal assembly, and you can see the top of the canister where the hose goes in.
Another thing to check is the hooter valve - it's the black plastic thing with two thick hoses and one thin one. Pull the thin hose off the throttle body, and suck on the hose. You shouldn't be able to pull air through it. If you can, then the diaphram in the hooter valve is bad, and that's your vacuum leak. Also, a bad hooter valve can cause stalling when you back off suddenly.
So - questions - what kind of tranny? Only on 1-2 shifts? If so, only on hard shifting? Does it stall at idle? Is the battery light on when the engine is running?
