I chose to repair. Here is the damage I found when I pulled the head:

4 bent exhaust valves
2 bent intake valves
broken chain (duh)
crank gear teeth stripped

I replaced the chain, chain guides, chain tensioner and all the gears (it came in a timing gear kit) $150.
Head gasket kit - $60
Valves - $70 for all six valves.
Valve job and lightly plane the head $315

Of course, once you have the head and timing cover off, you might as well replace the balance shaft chain and the balance shaft chain crank gear, since those are known weak spots.

I would be very surprised if you had to replace the piston.

The 91's and 92's apparently use a split roller timing chain which isn't very durable. My 1991 had 120,000 miles on it when the chain snapped.

I would fix engine, rather than get a used one, because there is a good chance a used engine will have the same problems. Of course this is only reasonable if you are going to do the work yourself. My car was off the road for about a month while I worked on it and waited for the machine shop to refinish the head.
