Basically, the tool used for the early engines without lower access panels is simply a pair of vise grips with a flat 3/16" thick pice of metal welded to one side. The torque converter can be severely damaged if it is dropped and it can damage the oil pump bushing if it slides too far out without support. (The later engines have a sheet metal access plate that can be removed and a flat plate bolted to the bell housing is used to hold the torque converter.)

A relatively easy way of restraining the torque converter for removal is the following: after the torque converter has been unbolted from the flex plate, pull the transmission away for the engine about 1 inch or so and thread a length of coat hanger wire through the opening and across the torque converter. (This may first involve reaching into the opening with your fingertips, and pushing the torque converter towards the transwmission to separate it completely from the flex plate.) Once the wire has been stretched across the face of the torque converter, it can be threaded through the bell housing mounting holes and twisted tight to hold everything in place.

I have also used a ratching luggage rack strap to do the same thing.
