There are others with vast knowledge on this subject, where I have little, but here are some thoughts: I hope someone more expert will sound warning notes where appropriate.

(1) Fluid condition is very important, and apparent faults may respond to a fluid change (or two, since it's not possible to get all the old stuff out). Cheap and easy.

(2) By the same token, when you buy a car, check the fluid level and colour. Read up on (or Search for) the correct method for checking the level. If the fluid is dark brown or burnt, I suggest you avoid the car like the plague because the damage will already have been done.

(3) Common running faults as reported here seem to include early, late or harsh changes. The valves, springs and seals which produce these faults can, I think, all be changed without removing the transmission, though you'll probably need to drain down the cooling system for access, and will need ultra-clean working conditions. The parts are not expensive and labour times are not too long, so if you prefer to hire it done this is good news too. Kickdown can be adjusted easily.

(4) The Townwsend "Saabmaster" site (see Sponsors) has lots of very useful (and official) trouble-shooting flow-charts and repair information but Saab's own automatic manual is a must for serious work. Search this board for details.

(5) There are plenty of tales of catastrophic failure to be found here, and the automatic transmissions on both my 9ks have needed expensive rebuilds, typical cost getting on for $2,000. Saab does limit the torque through automatics. However, plenty of people have very long-lived automatics; plenty of them have modified engines and tuners are quite bullish about this aspect. Apparently, Saab techs are surprised by the "down" on automatics. Plus there are plenty of failures reported on manual boxes, while a clutch isn't a cheap item to replace either.

(6) Finally, I love the rush (real and metaphorical) you get from accelerating an automatic 9kt. The Saab manual transmission is pretty routine and while some think it macho to have a stick shift, we Europeans have greater self-confidence (sorry, delete that bit... :<)). More fuel consumption and less ultimate performance, of course, but how often do you take a manual to the limit? Enjoy!
