In theory:
A narrower gap (.9mm) will give you better top end performance.
A wider gap (1.1mm) will provide a smoother idle.
1.0mm is a decent compromise.
In practice?
MAYBE you will notice a difference if you directly compare a .9mm gap to a 1.1mm gap. I have never been able to tell. The system seems to work fine at any gap within that range. It only becomes a problem if you don't check the gap regularly, because the gaps tend to widen over time. After 10,000 miles, you might be looking at 1.3 - 1.5mm, which could potentially damage the DI casette.
Just keep it at 1.0mm and you cant go wrong.
