The coolant temp sensor should trigger the cooling fan at or before 3/4 on the gauge. If it doesn't, then replace it immediately.

In that case, you might as well replace the thermostat at the same time.

If you're the DIY type, you can replace both items for about $40 and one hour of labor.

Here's the simple way:

With the radiator cool enough to touch, drain the coolant until its below the level of the sensor. Unscrew the sensor and replace it.

Facing the engine, the thermostat cover is at the top right of the engine. The main radiator hose connects to the cover itself, so its easy to find. Remove the hose and the cover, and note the orientation of the old thermostat before removing it. The little "bleed hole" of the new thermostat should be at the top, regardless of how the old thermostat was oriented. Clean the contact surface around the o-ring gasket if necessary, and install the new unit.

Once everything is reassembled, fill the coolant to the MAX level with pre-mixed 50/50 solution. Put on the cap and run the engine for thirty seconds. Re-check the coolant level, it will probably drop slightly, so refill it if necessary.

If you use the 87 degree sensor, and the 82 degree thermostat (both available at eeuroparts.com), the temp gage should NEVER read over 3/4. If it does, then you have a much more serious problem.
