Idler is good possibility

The idler pulley bearing going out would be my first guess. When it freezes, it can tear the belt apart. On the 88, you can back off the tension at the idler and see if it spins freely. How's the power steering working and does the engine speed change when you turn the headlights on? IF the power steering is low on fluid, you can get noise. I don't know what a PS pump sounds like when it goes. Alternator bearings are another possible and electrical loading can change the sound (sometimes).

My only other thought is that the Harmonic balancer could have been forced on improperly, and totaled the oil pump seal. But that would result in a major oil leak behind that pulley. I had a crankshaft bolt come off, and the harmonic balancer worked its way out and messed up the end of the crankshaft. That resulted in a very noticeable wobble and the loss of ALL the oil.
