on the road, period. I would not fault you for a second for making that choice.
Kelly is absolutely right that these people who are "whizzing by" are a hazard on the road. Any responsible, intelligent adult should be able to determine what speed is appropriate given the road conditions. Even if you do buy an AWD car, put the chains on anyway, and you will be just that much safer. At the very least, get studded snow tires.
There are any number of safety improvments, beyond AWD, that can offer a greater sense of security on the road. A short list would be: Seat belts, air bags, ABS, traction control, and snow tires.
If AWD gives better traction, then the security that it offers is very real. I disagree with Lu for lumping together SUVs and cars with AWD. The problem with (large) SUVs is that they are TOO large and they get poor gas mileage.
Although AWD adds some weight, it also improves traction. You can justify added weight if you are improving safety, and SUVs (in general) are not more safe than the safest cars for their added weight.
In the end, bad drivers are bad drivers, regardless of what they drive, and there's no way to get bad drivers off the road.
