you *will* need an air hammer to get the taper pin out. Do not start unless you have one. The pin is horizontal and there is no place to swing a mallet. I tried to make a press out of a C-clamp and all I did was bend off the threaded end (D'oh!). The joint most probably deteriorated because the shift shaft seal leaked down and soiled the rubber bushing. Make sure that you get a new taper pin and shift shaft seal. The key to getting out the seal is a fairly long screwdriver. Drive it through the seal and pry it out. Make sure you polish the shaft before you put in the new seal. The new seal is supposedly a new design which does not leak as easily. I could not compare the 2 seals as my old one was destroyed in the removal process. I did this project this summer.
