I just don't get it. These behemoths clog the roads, get aweful mileage, handle like a truck (many are, in fact, built on a truck chassis), and are downright dangerous for anyone caught in the path of one on a collision course.

You ask owners why they buy them, and women usually say "I feel safe," and/or "I like sitting high." Well, just go get a tank, Lady--then you're neighbor will get one, and we'll soon be importing even more oil from the Saudis than before.

More frightening, the U.S. government is giving big incentives to buy these giants. In a loophole to encourage the purchase of large trucks for commercial use, SUV's are included in the list, and company officials can get a $20k or more tax deduction for buying an SUV over a car.

What we need in this country is leadership oriented toward decreasing our dependence on foreign oil, not increasing it. Right now we have an oil man in the White House and don't have that level of leadership. In fact, his solution to everything seems to be drilling for more oil rather than encouraging waste.
