This happened to me too, about 4 months ago. It is an easy fix. You can do it yourself. There is no need to remove the tranny from the car, just LH wheel, wheel liner, and small tranny cover. I needed 1/2 hour to fix this and $15 (got the used part). There is a part on input shaft that got worn out (sorry I don't know what it's called). It should spin together with the input shaft, but since it got worn out it spins freely - thats's how you lost your gear.
When you remove the tranny cover (you should drai tranny oil first) you need to pull out the pin that connects fork to the gear selector lever. Don't remove the fork yet, but rap it around in a cloth, because when you pull it off thare are gonna be 3 small cylinders and springs flying around (thay are hidden underneath the round part that fork moves back and forth - this is what engages a gear). Just slide it off, and put aside in a jar or something so you dont loose them small peaces that I mentioned.
Next you have to slide of the faulty part. This moght give you some trouble, but take your time, use a hammer and "something", but be carefoul not to damage synchro (yellow - brass like material with spikes on it).
Put new part in.
Put springs and cylinders in it, etc...
Put back togeter in reverse order.
If I was't clear enough email me. I can send you some instructions.
