If you can hear the whirring on the pump then it is ok until it fails completely. Models (not sure of 9000 series) that have prepump systems can have intermittent problems if fuel level is below 1/4 tank and weak prepump can't cope with low pressure.
Pump usually fails when there is a defect on the armature of the motor. Sometimes rapping on the tank/pump connection moves it off the bad spot and it will start, but the pump will have to be replaced. You will be at 3,000 rpm one second and zero the next.
