i think you are right that the cv boot is a separate problem.. the dragging brake pad has got me thinking.. i did jack the car up and take the wheel off to take a closer look at things, when i did this i found a lot of ice. when it was jacked i had the handbrake on, but i also noticed that the brake was engaged. i'm not sure about the '88 if the handbrake activates the rear brakes or front brakes, but if it is the rear brakes then there is something thats making that brake activate. or if i happened to engage the handbrake that night,(which i don't usually do.. but its possible), and it does activate the front brakes, its probably possible that once again that brake pad was frozen...
I also tried wiggling the wheel around while it was jacked to see if the wheel was loose in any way but didn't feel any movement whatsoever.
