I removed the b/s chain out of my 91 9000S about 25k ago... I really haven't missed it much. At the same time I switched my engine mounts to the polyurethane which is reported to make vibration worse - so, I can't say how much is attributal to the chain vs. mounts. Car is still very smooth, no vibration at idle, I can feel just a touch in the shifter at higher revs 4k+
So, yes you can easily leave the chain out.
