The 9000 locks to have little doors. It sounds like yours were either removed by someone, or they've been stuck in the folded position.
In my '88, I had to remove the little door on the driver's lock because it bent. I've not had any trouble with lock icing. However, I regularly lube the locks with graphite or silicon lube, and always keep a tube of de-icer around.
Any lock can ice up. I had icing problems with my '86 900 - I assume you've just been lucky up to now.
WD-40 won't de-ice. It will drive away moisture, but it won't unfreeze ice. I prefer dry lubricants (graphite, etc), because they attract and hold less dust. It also puts less grease on the key, and I usually keep those keys in my pocket.
