Bar's Leaks may help, but the best fix is a new heater core.
I say this because when I changed my heater core for the same problem, there was coolant residue in the chamber where the heater core is mounted. If there is sufficient residue there, then airflow over the residue will continue to deliver the lovely smell into the cabin even if the Bar's Leaks seals the heater core.
Also, the stock heater core is an aluminum core with plastic tanks (in my view, made to leak) and leaking at the seams between the two. The new core, from the dealer in my case, was all aluminum.
There is a good write-up on Quasi's site that I followed. Frankly, I didn't think the job was that bad. If you go in, while you're in there, change the blower motor as well (if you haven't already done so). If it isn't squealing yet, a '97 blower motor should be ready to any time now.
Good luck. Email me if you have any questions.
Dan
