I suspect your battery is either getting tired, or there is a problem where the battery cable clamps onto the battery post.

Of course, a tired battery will cause slow cranking. A poor connection at the battery posts is another very common possibility, even with a fresh battery. Remove the battery clamps and clean the inside of the clamp and the outside of the post. Simply tightening a clamp doesn't clean out any oxidation where the post meets the clamp.

Check the electrolyte level in the battery, and the specific gravity, if possible. You can do this with a cheap ($15) tool from the autoparts store. It's just a squeeze bulb on a clear plastic body - you suck up some fluid from each battery cell, and a little float points to the level of charge. You may have one weak cell.

OK - so how does this affect the Pictogram and fuel gauge? The pictogram and fuel gauge are driven by the same electronics that drive the EDU. It actually has a little microprocessor there. If the cranking voltage is very low, sometimes the microprocessor won't 'wake up' properly (doesn't come out of reset cleanly), and in effect, looses its mind for a while. So the pictogram lights up, the gas gauge bangs around, and quite often the rest of the display shows nonsense. Sometimes it cleans up by itself, but usually needs the car to be shut off and restarted (with a decent startup voltage). It's doing no damage to the EDU.
