Yes, you do need to remove the door handle. No, it's not hard. The only difficult part is removing the door inner panel. There are many posts on that.
The door handle is held on with two screws. One is on the latch side of the door, but the other is at the front of the handle, and can only be reached from inside the door with the panel off.
Once you remove the handle, you can pop out the lock cylinder. The tumbler assembly fits into a metal can, and the ends of the can are bent over. Bend back the ends, and you can slide the tumbler out of the metal can. The little spring loaded door is at the front of the can.
Chances are the door hasn't broken off, but instead has just come adrift and stuck open. I'll warn you, I've never been successful in getting the little door back into place and the spring to work properly. It's very tricky, and even when I though I had it, it broke again in a week or so. However, it may just work fine for you.
I finally gave up on the little door and removed it. I give that lock a little more attention with pre-emptive de-icing and a shot of graphite. I've been running without the little door for a few years now, and the lock has never frozen up. And I live in Connecticut, where rain, ice, and snow are pretty common.
