Heater flap or frozen heater core Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 15 Jan 2003 08:54:46 In Reply to: No Heat This Morning - it 12 degrees in Boston, Tim, Wed, 15 Jan 2003 08:33:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just over the heater core there is a mixture flap. The position of the flap determines if you get cold (air from outside), all hot (air drawn over the always-hot heater core), or a mixture. The flap is controlled by a servo inside the dashboard, and the servo controlled by the ACC.
Go to the Townsend site and find the Self Test for the ACC (you've got ACC II). I'm assuming you have ACC - if you've got manual temp controls, then ignore the self-test part.
Sometimes the linkage to the flap breaks. Then the flap falls to the cold side (winter only), or hot side (summer only - Murphy's law of heater flaps). Open the hood, and at the base of the windshield there is a broad horizontal plastic cover. Remove it. Look on the passenger side of the heater box (center). You'll see a horizontal shaft sticking out with an arm, and a stiff wire from the arm going into the firewall. Often the tip of the arm breaks. If the arm has broken, you can get a Mixter Arm Repair Kit from Saab for about $8. If everything is in place, make sure that when you go from LO to HI temp (ACC or manual), that the arm moves back and forth. If not, the problem is in the servo (ACC) or knob (manual).
Another possibility is that your heater core has frozen. If your anti-freze isn't in as good shape as it could be, it can freeze. The heater core is the farthest from the mass of the engine. It's possible for it to freeze up, but the engine still be OK. If your commute is short enough, the core won't unfreeze. If the problem mysteriously goes away when you go out to the car at lunch today, that may be the problem. Get the anti-freeze checked - it's only going to be colder next week.
