Fifth gear (actually the 5th gear synchro hub) stripped on my 89 9000T about 10 days ago. It is possible to replace the gear without removing or dismantling the entire transmission by removing the inner fender well and transmission end plate on the driver's side of the car. About $120 from Saab dealer. WARNING: The internal shift rods in the transmission are not mechanically secured and can pull out of the transmission VERY easily. You must pull on the 5th gear shift rod to remove the shift fork and synchro hub -- make absolutely certain that you are applying counter pressure to the top of the fork to prevent it lifting and dismantling internally. Even if the shift rods are pulled an inch or two beyond their normal range of travel, the little SS balls and springs and pins inside the shifter assembly will be released. This means that the entire transmission must then be removed from the car, disassembled, repaired and then reassembled. This is what happened to me, turning a two hour job into a two day one. The shift rods must be placed (and remain) in a very precise position in order for the shifter to work. Here is the critical arrangement: the 1-2 and 3-4 shift rods must poke about 1/2" out of the top of the transmission case (they should be even with each other) and the 5th gear rod must protrude an additional 1 and 3/8 inch above them. This allows the gear selector to move freely between the rods in neutral. If the shifter jams and the gear selector can not find neutral, the rods must be rearranged into this configuration to work (provided that they have not been moved so far out of their range that the mechanism fell apart inside the transmission). I have benefitted greatly from the archive and wish to add my contribution to it.
