Warning: Towing in 5th gear/overdrive is harmful

Hello. I stripped the 5th gear hub in my 89 turbo. The local saab technician who I consulted had never seen this occur before (he has been with the dealership for many years). Although the car had 168,000 miles on it at the time, I believe that the hub was stressed by pulling my sailboat (about 1,000 pounds total weight with trailer) and my popup camper (about 1300 pounds total weight) in 5th. When I replaced the hub, I was able to inspect the other gears/hubs. All are in good condition. But they are all also much larger in size and more durable. I will only tow in 4th gear from now on, and if you tow anything with your saab, I make the same friendly suggestion to you. I wish someone had warned me beforehand.
Best,
Dan K
