When you first did the tranny swap, your shifter felt like someone had replaced the linkage with bendy straws that were connected to a transmission half-a-mile away; you could hardly tell the difference between first and fifth.
Last time, after we just finished off the short-shift project, the shifter felt pretty close to mine, any my transmission is probably at least ten years newer.
I've noticed some increase in lateral play recently with my shifter also, and I'm going to agree with Chad about the internal centering springs. Perhaps the cold affects the internal linkage, which would then be eliminated upon thermal expansion. I haven't checked, but it might be useful to see if the wobbling reduces (or maybe even INCREASES) after the car is thoroughly warmed up.
Are you still using the hose clamps on the shift coupler? You might want to check those, maybe they've gotten loose.
You could try shifting with your left hand only, then you might not notice it as much. Or, you could always have someone shift for you, and when your alone just use first gear only, then you wouldn't notice it at all.
And stop chewing on the shift nob when you get angry.
