Colin
I have been using the Urethane upper mount on my '91 9000 CD Turbo Automatic for about 3 years now. Bought it from Sobstory in the US. My observation was that I could not tell the difference between the original and the new one. Maybe a tad more when the A/c comes on at idle and the engine vibrates more anyway. My opinion is that it makes very little difference if your lower mounts are in good shape - they take all the vibe and hold the engine in a neutral position.
I strongly recommend the urethane mount for durability and ease of installation. All the pressing nonsense with the other thing makes the Urethane mounts worthwhile.
Installation - Putting them in is as easy as plugging an electrical appliance into the wall socket - however you first have to take out the old pressed insert. I tried several other users' suggestions to do things like heat the outside with a torch or make a puller out of a disc of steel and a threaded rod etc. but none worked for me.
What I did was took a fillet knife and cut the remaining attachment of the old rubber mount to its steel cylinder. To get the steel ring out from the strut attached to the engine I took a hacksaw and first led the blade into the cylinder then secured it to the hacksaw handle. I then cut a slot in the the bottom of the steel ring cylinder while trying not to overrun the steel and cut the Aluminium casting of the strut. IN the end I did overrun a bit and grooved the casting a bit on one side but nothing that hurt it. Once cut like that the steel ring will loose its press fit and literally fall out. Then just insert the two halves of the new urethane mount from either side of the strut ring and bolt up the arm.
Cautions: Apart from the agony of sawing in a bent over position under the hood for quite a while, the other danger is that you will rock the engine quite a bit. In my case I loosened the air connection hose to the turbo and the car died during my test drive. Had to have it towed before I found the problem. So check your vacuum and hose connections when you are done.
Good Luck and try to imagine you're having fun while doing it.
Jay
