There are at least several ways to compress the tensioner to remove the belt:
1) Buy the tensioner retainer for $60 (p/n 8395154 eEuroparts.com). This allows one to do it easily & safely from the top.
2) Compress the tensioner pulley with a pry bar, very shallow socket, or crow foot, and remove the belt. It helps to have an extra set of hands to do this safely. For both methods 1 & 2 it helps to know in advance how to route the belt back on by feel, since you can't see too much with your hands down there.
3) Remove the RF wheel & forward fender liner, compress the belt by torquing on the tensioner pulley, puling on the belt, or some other means, and retain the tensioner position with a homemade tool, as mentioned in another post. This method has great visibility for mounting the belt. I think both the owner's manual & Haynes have a diagram of the belt routing.
I've used all 3 methods, and by far the easiest & quickest for me is #2, but it really depends on whether you need to remove the wheel for some other reason. Check the condition of the bearings for both idlers while you're in there, and remember that ONE of the idler pulleys (it might be the tension idler, but I'm not sure) has a left-hand threaded bolt.
